Santo Domingo:

This is the first city in America founded by European people. It is the capital of the Dominican Republic. It was founded by Bartalome Columbus in 1496 on the eastern part of the Ozama River. Nicolas de Ovando moved the city to the western bank of the river in 1502. This is a cosmopolitan, flourishing city, full of buildings referring to its historical past showing us the Spanish conquest on the American continent. It is the biggest city in the Caribbean. Santo Domingo is a varied, interesting area both for tourism and the local inhabitants. There are a lot of precious ancient buildings which can be visited even now as they are in a really very good condition. A pleasant walk in the historical part of the city is necessary to realise how important these nice buildings are. Santo Domingo at night is a pleasure for the young and adults because there are plenty of bars and entertainment facilities waiting for them during the night.

Santa Domingo travel details:

Our first stop is Playa Caleta, the only seashore in Santo Domingo and the smallest seashore at the same time in the Dominican Republic. We go to the caves of Los Tres Ojos. It is an interesting place with caves and little rivers under the surface. The view is definitely breathtaking and the rocks naturally decorate the caves. Our tour continues to Columbus Lighthouse, it was built for the celebration of the “500 Years of Discovery and Evangelization of America. Christopher Columbus’s light mausoleum can also be found here. Then the next stop is the historical part of the city, which is part of the world heritage. The city of Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic and was the first city founded by Europeans in America. The name comes from the fact that this part of the city was founded by Spanish settlers. This area of Santo Domingo has colonial buildings and cobbled streets which are very well preserved and makes a great tourist attraction, as is the Alcázar de Colón and the First Cathedral of America. The construction of this magnificent building started in 1512, the style was totally different then that of construction used in the Dominican Republic, as it has a Gothic style influenced by other styles. After lunch we continue our tour to the presidential palace, which is home to Dr. Leonel Fernandez Reina, then we head to the Duarte market, go to some richer and poorer parts of the city in Santo Domingo: Bella Vista, Ensanche, Piantini Capotillo and finally La zurza.
