Altagracia trip description:

The tour begins with a visit to the premises of the Tabacalera de Garcia, the largest cigar factory in the world, with over 4.300 employees. Here you can see the proud work of the most experienced craftsmen in the tobacco industry, making the most famous handmade brands in the world (Romeo y Julieta, H. Upmann, Montecristo, Don Diego, Playboy and Trinidad). Leaving the tobacco factory, our journey continues to Casa de Campo, Altos de Chavon, a village of ancient Mediterranean style, built above the Chavon River. It is also known as the coral city. It hosts a cultural centre, the National Archaeological Museum, and the so-called City of Artists. It also has an amphitheatre that hosts musical performances with world-famous artists, the first concert was held with Frank Sinatra and Carlos Santana. When you visit Altos de Chavon your first thought is that it is a very old city, so it seems on its cobbled streets and houses appear to have at least 400 years as it has all the appearance of a medieval city, but it was only in 1976 is when its construction began. The American businessman Charles Bludhorn, the owner of Werner Bros took advantage of thousands of tons of stone that came from blowing up a mountain to build the buildings, squares, church and amphitheatre. Some say that it was a birthday present for the businessman’s daughter.

The Archaeological Museum of Altos de Chavon has more than 30,000 archaeological pieces about the Taino Indian people’s lives. Our last stop is Boca de Yuma, where we will have lunch with fish, and then finish our tour with a visit to the Basilica of Higuey and then return to our hotels
